PHP code Snippet : How can I change the collation for my current MySQL database to UTF-8?

Changing the collation for all tables in a MySQL database can be time consuming depending on how many tables you have. That’s why we recommend using the following PHP script for changing the collation for all tables at a time: <?php $db = mysql_connect(‘localhost’,’DBUserName’,’DBPassword’); if(!$db) echo "Cannot connect to the database – incorrect details"; mysql_select_db(‘DBName’); $result=mysql_query(‘show tables’); while($tables = mysql_fetch_array($result)) { foreach ($tables as $key => $value) { mysql_query("ALTER TABLE $value COLLATE utf8_unicode_ci"); }} echo "The collation of your database has been successfully changed!"; ?> Make sure to substitute in the above script: DBName with your database name; DBUserName with your Database User Name; Password with your password for the mysqldatabase user; utf8-general_ci with your new collation if different; NOTE: MySQL user must have administrative rights to do this.

Windows Tips and Tricks : How to Increase Virtual Memory in Windows XP and Vista

As the name implies, virtual memory is non-physical memory. Windows uses virtual memory when it doesn’t have enough "regular" physical memory to perform a task. When it does this, Windows uses your hard drive to store information that normally would be put into your Random Access Memory or RAM . Virtual memory is simulated RAM. When you have used up all your physical memory, your computer will shift data to an empty space on the hard drive. The computer swaps data to the hard drive and back to your RAM as needed. If you don’t have a lot of hard drive space left and you’re experiencing lots of problems, lack of virtual memory may be why. When Windows runs out of memory (virtual and non-virtual), it just doesn’t run all that well. Why bother to add extra RAM to your computer when you can use hard drive space instead? Main reason – RAM is much faster. Whenever you’re using a lot of virtual memory, you’re slowing your computer down. The best work around is to get more physical memory. Minimum requirement for a computer with Windows XP as its operating system is 512MB and 1GB at least for Vista. RAM price has gone down nowadays and having a 1GB or 2GB for your computer is not that expensive anymore. The more physical memory the faster the processing of your computer will be and the more programs you can run simultaneously. How to Increase Virtual Memory If you find yourself running out of virtual memory, or keep getting messages telling you that you are, you might want to change from the default setting of “System managed size” or “No paging file” to a “Custom size” to [...]

Open Source Applications : How they can be Beneficial ?

With the advent of learning has taken various forms. One can now learn new skills and acquire new knowledge regardless of where one is and when one wants. What used to be a dream is now coming true with e-learning. In fact, e-learning has brought many learning avenues for a large number of people. With advancements in e-learning technologies, learning has become fun. Commercial software developers are vying with one another to create top-notch e-learning software applications. Many a time, such software applications are not, however, easily accessible to the vast majority of people. This blocks them out from accessing and profiting from e-learning opportunities. This is where open resource software comes in handy. Though some critics say that open source software applications have not yet been fully developed to cater to complex learning situations which commercial software applications can, we cannot overlook its advantages. Minimal or no Cost: Courses offered through open source e-learning technologies come with either a minimal cost or are absolutely free of cost. Wide Reaching: With open source software, knowledge-sharing has become an easy and quick process. Besides, learners can have a continuous and unhindered accessibility to the learning resources since there are no payment procedures. Easy to Customize or Upgrade: Open source e-learning software comes in an easily-customizable fashion. A programmer can access the source code and make necessary modifications to the program so that it functions as per their requirements. An internet service provider, or ISP, is only a provider. It is for that reason that preparing the computing space, whether it be a home or business, is the sole responsibility of the individual. The truth is that there is a wide range of problems within your own home that could be wreaking havoc on your broadband connection. Luckily we have devised a list of 10 steps that can have you on your way to the blazing fast internet connection that you pay for in minutes. Move Closer to the Router: If you are using a wireless broadband connection, simply try moving closer to the router. In many cases this is one of the best ways to boost your connection speed for free. Lose the Line Extensions: One of the most common problems is the line extension. A line extension is a length of phone line used to allow the placement of phone jacks all throughout a building. Connect the Router Directly to the Master Socket: Another easy way to boost your connection is to make sure that your router is connected as closely to the master phone socket as possible. To accomplish this situate your router as near as you reasonably can to the master socket and then use the shortest operable cable to connect the two. Check for any Interference: A variety of [...]

picture source : BBC Urdu July 28, 2010 Wednesday morning, the day began with monsoon rains heavily showering in the capital city of Pakistan with most of the Margalla hills and surrounded area covered with thick fog and clouds. Many flights had been suspended or delayed due to bad weather early today. A local airline’s jet craft Airbus 321 carrying about 152 travelers was spotted flying very low above the capital city; the turbulence in the plane was visible. In matter of minutes, the unfortunate jet hit the Margala Hills with a loud bang. The eye witnesses to the crash reported plumes of ash and clouds of smoke rising up the crash site. The Margala hills, rocky mountains, densely covered with trees and bushes made the possibility of any survivors much difficult as the crash site midst of the mountain along with a foggy weather is an extremely challenging and difficult terrain for any rescue teams, fire fighters and paramedics to reach the spot timely. Army helicopters flew despite bad weather however, the rescue workers dig to the bodies under flaming debris nearly bear handed. Initial reports confirmed around 2 to 5 severely injured survivors taken to the hospital, lately declared dead making the crash a tragic “no survivor” incident. Emergency measures are taken in all major capital hospitals where the grieved await ambulances in tears and sobbing. The main roads to the Margala Hills are blocked so far.  The sad incident left the entire nation in great [...]

A closer look at Islamic Architecture around the globe

Islamic architecture encompasses a wide range of both secular and religious styles from the foundation of Islam to the present day, influencing the design and construction of buildings and structures in Islamic culture. The principal Islamic architectural types are: the Mosque, the Tomb, the Palace and the Fort. From these four types, the vocabulary of Islamic architecture is derived and used for buildings of lesser importance such as public baths, fountains and domestic architecture. A specifically recognisable Islamic architectural style emerged soon after Muhammad’s time, developing from localized adaptations of Egyptian, Persian/Sassanid and Byzantine models. An early example may be identified as early as 691 AD with the completion of the Dome of the Rock (Qubbat al-Sakhrah) in Jerusalem. It featured interior vaulted spaces, a circular dome, and the use of stylized repeating decorative patterns (arabesque). The Great Mosque of Kairouan (in Tunisia), considered as the ancestor of all the mosques in the western Islamic world, is one of the best preserved and most significant examples of early great mosques. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is constituted of a massive square minaret, a large courtyard surrounded by porticos and a huge hypostyle prayer hall covered on its axis by two cupolas. The Great Mosque of Samarra in Iraq, completed in 847 AD, combined the hypostyle architecture of rows of columns supporting a flat base above which a huge spiraling minaret was constructed. The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul also influenced Islamic architecture. When the Ottomans captured the city from the Byzantines, they converted the basilica to a mosque (now a museum) and incorporated Byzantine architectural elements into their own work (e.g. domes). The Hagia Sophia also served as a model for many Ottoman mosques such as [...]
